MAKE IT WITH WOOL

Promoting the beauty and versatility of wool while teaching individuals life skills such as sewing, creativity, and public speaking.

Divisions and Ages

  • Preteens 8-12 years
      Entries may include: A dress, jumper, skirt, pants, shorts, vest sweater, shirt/blouse, jacket or combination of garments.
  • Juniors 13-16 years
  • Seniors 17-24 years
  • Junior and Senior entries may include:  
              One-piece garments- dress, jumper, outerwear jacket, coat or cape.
              Two-piece outfit- coat, jacket, cape, blouse/shirt, vest or sweater WITH dress, jumper, skirt, pants or shorts.
              Ensemble- 3 or more garments worn together at one time: coat, jacket, cape, and blouse/shirt, vest or sweater 
                                WITH dress, jumper, skirt, pants or shorts.

  • Fashion Apparel Design: Students currently pursuing a degree in a college-level fashion or apparel design program.

  1. Participants must design an original garment and then sew, knit, crochet or felt the garment using wool fabrics, fibers and/or yarn.

Students may participate in either the Fashion Design Competition or the State MIWW Competition, not both.

4-H members may participate in the Idaho Make It With Wool Contest, with their 4-H Wool Sewing Projects. The contest is separate from 4-H.
Fair and Blue ribbons are not MIWW contest requirements.

Objectives of the MIWW Program

  • To promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns.

  • To encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving wool fabrics and yarns.

  • To recognize creative skills.

  • To develop life skills, including:
    Being responsible
    Being a good sport
    Accepting judge’s decisions Learning about and appreciating diversity
    Public presentation and speaking skills

Entry Requirements

Have all fabric and yarn samples and testing fees sent to your State MIWW Director to complete the required testing for percentage of Wool.

Enter at least one garment.
Garments must have been completed after January 1st of the contest year.
Complete and mail entry forms with appropriate attachments as directed on entry form by September 15, 2018.
Use separate form for each entry.
Pay $12 non-refundable entry fee (payable to National MIWW) for each garment.

 

Wool Fabric

What fabrics and yarn can I use?

100% wool or wool blend (minimum 60% wool or specialty wool fiber) for each fashion fabric or yarn used. Specialty wool fibers include: alpaca, angora, camel, cashmere, llama, mohair, and vicuna.

The entire garment body (front, back and sleeves) must be wool or wool-blend fabric. Vests worn with a suit, sport coat, or blazer may have a back of non-wool fabric. Vests worn as top layer or with outerwear coat/jacket must have a wool back.

Trims, facings, interfacings, linings, and underlining may be fabrics other than wool or wool blends.

How Can I Be Certain my Fabrics & Yarns are Wool?

To qualify for the contest all fabrics must be tested for percentage of wool fiber content by the Yocum-McColl Testing Lab.

It is best to test your fabrics and yarn before sewing your items.

Send 5x5 swatches of each fabric or a 36” sample of each yarn and $7 per swatch/sample to your State MIWW Director at:

Appropriateness to contestant’s lifestyle and age.
Coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design.
Fit and overall appearance
Contestant’s presentation.
Construction Quality.
Creativity in design and use of wool.
Conveys and promotes the beauty, comfort and versatility of wool.
